Strengths

Trade-offs

Segment control is the whole specification
Every strip lists brightness and colour count. The number that decides how it looks is whether it can drive sections independently. A single-zone strip is one colour at a time — every “rainbow” effect on it is the entire run cycling together.
RGBIC puts addressable chips along the strip. That is what makes a gradient possible.
Mount it where it is seen indirectly
The strip is a line of bright points. Aimed at you it is a row of dots; bounced off a wall it is a wash of colour. Behind the desk, under a shelf lip, along the skirting behind the setup — those are the placements that work.
Plan the run before peeling
The adhesive is one-shot. On painted plasterboard it holds once and then gives up. Work out the path first, corners included, because a corner means folding the strip back on itself.
Verdict
Good value for indirect room lighting, and honest about being decoration.
